Lacrosse Participation Policy

For any questions please send an e-mail to either the VP of Girls Lacrosse or VP of Boys Lacrosse.

Policy for Playing Up

It is the policy of PLAY Lacrosse that each registered player participate in his/her age group as set forth by US Lacrosse, YLM or MSLax regulations.  However PLAY Lacrosse recognizes that in certain rare situations it may be appropriate and beneficial to an individual participant’s development for him/her to play up to the next age level.  This determination will be made by the Development Director based on an evaluation of the individual participant.  Any decision to move a player up will be based on the betterment of all parties involved; the individual player being considered as well as the program overall.

Equally important, both the short and long term best interests of PLAY Lacrosse must be given consideration.  In addition, there is an increased risk of injury for participants when playing outside of their designated age classification.  Finally, both YLM and MSLax have set guidelines and restrictions on players playing outside of their designated age groups that will be taken into consideration.

* In extreme heat under the heat index of 105 degrees, make sure you have a cooler with ice water/towels for the players to cool off with.  Bring extra cold water.  If possible, let players rest in the shade when not on the field.  Encourage parents/fans to bring umbrellas to provide shade.

* Remind players that they should drink 2 glasses of water each hour (for a few hours) after the game.

YOUTH LACROSSE MINNESOTA HEAT GUIDELINES

Summer lacrosse brings the requirement to be aware of the impact the weather indicator Heat Index has on the safety of our players. The Heat Index is a combination of temperature and humidity. The YLM endorses the guidelines below for determining what should be done when the Heat Index reaches certain levels. This document is also available on the YLM website, www.youthlaxmn.com.

The NOAA website (www.weather.gov) will provide the current Heat Index by city or zip code. This will not provide the exact Heat Index at your site and factors like the type of field (grass or artificial turf) can significantly impact player safety in high Heat Index conditions.

Coaches, officials, and administrators are encouraged to err on the side of caution. All those involved in administering the game including coaches from both teams, officials and site administrators should discuss precautions before the game and, if needed, again at halftime. When mandatory water breaks are needed, the timer should be directed to stop play and sound the horn approximately halfway through each quarter. Teams must be prepared in for high Heat Index conditions and bring coolers filled with water and towels and/or watermelon and oranges as well as ample water. Having an adequate supply of water for all players is an absolute requirement in order to play in high Heat Index conditions. In addition, players and their parents should be reminded that players need to consume addition water throughout the day before and after the game. If sufficient water is not available, the game should not be played.

Such decisions will be communicated through the YLM website, an email blast, or both.
