Emergency!

What do I do now?!

Unfortunately, in spite of modern equipment, player safety rules, and proper training, there is always the risk of a serious injury in youth sports.  It's important to keep several things in mind in the event of any emergency involving a player.

  • Keep your cool.  Stay focused and assess the situation.  Is the player alert, can the player move on their own, where does it hurt?  Gather the basics and focus on the player, not on getting the game started again.  When in doubt, summon medical personnel that may be present at an event or game, or call 911 if needed.
  • Ask for help.  Have another parent call 911 if necessary and ask if any of the other parents present are medical professionals or first responders.  Our community is filled with medical experts, military personnel, and first responders that have all been trained in first aid and can help.
  • Communicate.  If parents aren't already present, have someone notify them of the situation and look for ways to support them.  In addition, it's important to talk to other players as they will likely be upset as well and may need some encouragement or a break to deal with the stress of the situation.

In any emergency, it's important to focus on the player and their wellness first and use good judgement.  Staying calm and focused, asking for help, and communicating with those around you will make the best of a difficult situation.

What is available at P.L.A.Y. Events

Since P.L.A.Y. uses facilities provided at city and school locations, many of those locations have either a medical kit or an AED (Automated External Defibrillator) on site.  Look for the AED signs at the schools or at Ponds and Ryan parks.

At many events and tournaments there will be EMT's on duty as well to help with care and processes and equipment.

With one or two people watching over large areas - be sure to recognize where they are in case of need. At the Concessions areas at Ponds and Ryan there are minor care medical supplies in metal cabinets.

We hope to never have a critical case at the fields or gyms but in case it happens (as it has in the past) remain calm but act quickly.

Enjoy the game and be prepared!!
