Volleyball 2008
Volleyball is a unique sport, in that it is a rebound game and the ball is always in motion. So many games and sports have flow – but in Volleyball the flow must remain constant with the ball never touching the ground until you score a point. Due to this it is a difficult concept to grasp and the techniques and form to learn are unique. P.L.A.Y. is fortunate to have a Volleyball Instructor that will break down the instruction and drills portions of the game that are essential to learning to play well and properly. Lead Volleyball Instructor Tim Reckmeyer is in his 4th year of teaching the fundamentals and details of the game to the P.L.A.Y and the program has grown in ability because of the attention to these details.
This program offers every girl the opportunity to learn the sport from the ground – up.
By the end of the year there will be great growth in the abilities of these players from the beginning to the end. This will enhance their confidence in athletics and especially Volleyball.
The program was expanded last year to include those 3rd & 4th graders that wanted to learn the skills. The 5th/6th program is now in its 5th year. This year there will also be an introduction into the 7th/8th grade levels due to the middle school not offering this level of program. So if you want to play Volleyball and are in 7th or 8th grade – this is your opportunity!
LEVELS:
3rd/4th Grade
This grade level will run from early September through mid October. Players are taught many skills and drills and learn the need for developing these skills. Most 3rd/4th graders will come out of this being able to serve overhand! There are approx. 12 dates they meet and primarily they will be Tuesday & Thursday evenings. Since this is primarily a developmental program there will be mostly practices – with a scrimmage and game thrown into the end of the season, to allow the girls to experience and use their skills learned. Practices will be held at PLHS.
5th/6th Grade
Very much like 3rd/4th – however they will be introduced to a few more games toward the end of the season and also have a season-end Game Day Jamboree. The primary focus here is on fundamentals and learning the rules of the game. There will be approx. 16 dates they meet at this level and these too will be Tuesday and Thursday at PLHS. There will be no traveling opportunity for current fifth graders. Practices will be held at PLHS. Details for 6th grade Traveling are listed below.
7th/8th Grade
An In House program is offered for 7th/8th graders that focuses on playing games. This program will tentatively meet on Tuesday and Thursday in the early evening at HOMS. Details for 7th/8th grade Traveling are listed below.
6th/7th/8th Grade Traveling
A Traveling programs is offered for 6th/7th/8th grades. The season runs from early September through the end of October. Space is limited in this program, so be sure your child is available for practices and game days. Tryouts are required and are held on the evening of Wednesday, September 3rd at PLHS from 6:00-8:00 (the night before the first day of school). Traveling teams will practice after school on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 3:00 – 5:00 at HOMS. 6th graders will play games on Monday evenings at various locations. 7th/8th graders will play games on Saturday mornings in Burnsville. Volunteers are necessary to help make this a successful program, and will help determine how many teams can be offered. If you are able to assist at any of the after-school practices, please let us know!
Traveling Clinics
Pre-season clinics will be held on August 20th, 25th and 27th from 6:30-8:00 at the PLHS. These are for 6th/7th/8th graders registered for the volleyball program and have an interest in trying out for a traveling team. The clinics offer an opportunity to brush up your game before tryouts! There is no cost to attend the clinics.
COACHES/ASSISTANTS
We do need volunteers to reinforce the instruction given for both Inhouse and Traveling programs. The Volleyball instructor will give all the instruction – then you will be asked to work with your team on those same things after he spends time teaching the skill. No prior experience is needed, just the interest to help your daughter and her friends learn the game. There are at least 3-4 never before coaches each year that learn a lot about the game! To be a coach – on the PLAY website, go to ‘Forms’, click on it, on next page scroll down to Coaches Forms – Background Check and Application.
Both can be done on-line, the Background check – just click on link and go through the couple pages, even if you have done this recently – please submit again! Then to apply to volleyball – go back into ‘register’ – Activity Coordinator and click on Volunteer – then select the Sport and age you want to coach and you will be in the loop from there. Coaches will have a clinic they will learn many of the techniques and drills they will be going over during the season and how to have fun with this great sport. So look for that information when you go to register!! In the comment section – write in who you would like to co-coach with!
If you have interest or other questions, contact the VP of Volleyball, Robin Wall. The email information is under ‘Board’ (click) on the left side of this VB page. Robin is in her second year and coached last year with little experience and had a great time, get in on the fun! Thank you for your interest in the program, a few volunteers are needed to help get the season up and keep it going – ‘Get in the Game’ !!
