LACROSSE:

LACROSSE

Out of Season

Dear Parents, Players and Coaches:

Welcome to P.L.A.Y. Lacrosse. Hello, my name is Tim Ranagan, I am the V.P. of Lacrosse for Prior Lake Athletics for Youth (P.L.A.Y.). I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and provide information about the Lacrosse program that your son or daughter may already participate in or may be considering.
About Lacrosse:  Lacrosse is an exhilarating sport, fast-paced and full of action. The game incorporates long sprints up and down the field with abrupt starts and stops, passes and dodges.  Lacrosse is played with a stick, the crosse, which the player uses to throw, catch and scoop the ball. The sport of lacrosse is a combination of basketball, soccer and hockey skills. Anyone can play lacrosse-- big or small. The game requires and rewards coordination and agility, not brawn. Quickness and speed are two highly prized qualities in lacrosse.
Fun Facts: Did you know Lacrosse is the fastest growing team sports in the United States? Youth participation in the sport has grown over 500% since 1999 and no sport has grown faster at the high school level.
Philosophy: The main objective of P.L.A.Y. lacrosse is to introduce this wonderful sport to our young players and teach them the fundamentals that are essential to succeed. The ultimate goal is to make this a positive and fun experience for the player, parent and coach.
Who can play? Both girls and boys can play lacrosse. Note, the girls and boys game do incorporate different rules and equipment. Currently we have one 7&8 grade girl’s team as well as two 3&4, 5&6 and 7&8 grade boys’ teams. We are hoping to add more girl teams to the program.
Volunteers: Because Lacrosse is a new sport in the mid-west, we do encourage parents to help grow P.L.A.Y. Lacrosse by volunteering as a coach, co-coach, team parent, coordinator etc. If you have a basketball, football, hockey, baseball or a soccer background, you will be a quick study of lacrosse. Additionally, there is a current group of coaches that you can draw help form. For the 2009 season, we are in need of a 7&8 grade girls coach. Our only requirement is that the head coach be a Parent. Feel free to Co-Coach with a Friend! – We will get you training if needed.
****Note, if we do not have enough volunteer coaches we will have to charge an additional fee to pay someone to coach that particular team.****
ON-LINE REGISTRATION: We encourage you to register online so we can start coordinating for the season. PLEASE SIGN UP TODAY – DON’T BE LATE !! (It’s on this website! – Left hand side!)
SPRING (7th/8th Grade only) January 1 – February 18, 2008
SUMMER (see below) January 1 – April 18, 2008
ON-SITE/LIVE REGISTRATION – Times to be determined soon
Uniforms are not covered in your registration fee. Please be prepared to pay additional for uniforms (2 jerseys or pennies, 1 pair of shorts/skirts) if needed. Last year they were about $80.

There will be two seasons: Spring and Summer
SPRING:
The spring league will run from March through mid-May. Boys in 7th-8th grade can register; currently there is no girl’s spring league. Practices are held 2-3 times a week with games being played on weekends. This will be a full checking league and may be somewhat physical for a 1st time player. For the 7th /8th Grade Boys level, we will be formulating a competitive level team which will require tryouts.
SUMMER:
The summer league will run from May through the end of July. This program will offer teams for all levels of play. Practices and games will primarily be held Monday – Thursday at Twin Oaks Practice  fields. There will be 2-3 weekend tournaments. All tournaments will be held in the Metro area.   Depending on the number of players registering for the sport, tryouts might be required for the 7&8th grade boys summer teams. Otherwise, the boys 7&8th spring team will carry over to the summer session.
Teams will be made up in the following age groups:

  • Boys 7th-8th grade
  • Boys 3rd/4th and 5th/6th
  • Girls 7th-8th grade & we are hoping to start a 5th/6th grade team- 4th grade girls may be allowed to play on 5th/6th if numbers and ability allow

PLEASE NOTE: There will be a MANDATORY parent meeting and uniform fitting/ordering evening. Date and time to be determined (Late April). We will be discussing equipment, jerseys, volunteering, and an overview of the sport. We plan to have equipment vendors at this meeting to help with sizing and product selection.
If you have any questions, comments or are interested in coaching, asst. coaching or just helping out please send an email to Director of Lacrosse – Dan Gratz at dan.gratz@conagrafoods.com. or to Tim Ranagan, VP of Lacrosse at tranagan@mchsi.com
